Firstly I have no affiliation to any companies, my only connection is that I
have moved alot.

I have had good and bad, but mostly good, having rented their trucks,
trailers, tow dollies, car transporters, bought a hitch etc etc....
After one bad experience I realized the following to minimize failure rates:

General rule of thumb.
Never use the smaller franchises, bigger ones get more returns.
Visit the place in advance and see selection of trucks, equipment, general
condition etc..
Talk to the guy in charge and ask questions over, late fees, average late
returns etc.
Put down the deposit in person and inspect the type of equipment you will be
using.
Find out if the person you talk to will be working the day of the pickup to
help you.

Moving anything is usually a big deal. Anytime I have moved there is no
chance to postpone and whatever needs moving has to be done that day without
fail. Its worth the extra time up front.
As for trailers, tow dollies etc...They will not allow pick up with another
vehicle. Car transport trailers can only be used behind their trucks.
Note: As most of you know, disconnect the drive shaft of your LBC (except
minis + other FWD) before dragging behind on a tow dolly. Car transporter
is the way to go.

Still having nightmares over 2 consecutive 48hr trips from Cincinnati to LA,
with 3 cars + houseloads of junk.
Note to self: Next time call United Van Lines.

Sounds like the nightmare I had with them about 5 years ago. I even gave
them about $60 deposit for the truck. Someone should sue those aholes. The
agent was also very pissed at the company, and quit renting their junky
equipment. He told me they had pulled my truck for a 1-way rental which is
much more lucrative for them. I think the problem starts with the CEO of
U-Haul. They are completely worthless and without ethics.
