I had a similar problem in my Esprit once. The bottom of the fuel tank with
the sender unit got clogged with sludge. The other tank had run dry and since
the sender unit said I still had fuel I tended to doubt fuel was the problem.
I was able to limp home in spurts. To rule out a tank restriction problem
I'd rev the engine from under the hood while observing the see-through fuel
filter (if you have one). If it always stays full, look to the carb/floats,
etc. If it empties out I'd look for a clogged tank /bad fuel pump (ruptured
diaphram). I don't remember if you said the pump stops running. Mine would
run like crazy then shut off (it would try to catch up for the fuel restri-
ction.. once I used it all up, it would run like crazy again).
