Another way to go other than a camcorder is a more dedicated system.
I got a Sony GV-A500 VCR ( Hi8) and a PC-33C camera from Super
Circuits. The advantage is that the small camera is easier to mount and
the Sony tape deck has a built in LCD screen for playback. Works OK
in a closed car, but would be a problem for an open car. The LCD is
hard to see in bright sun. The other advantage is that the camera can
be mounted in locations other than from the drivers point of view. Like
right down at cone level on the exterior of the car. :)
This system went to the top of Pikes Peak during the '98 event, on John Wells,
Wells Coyote. The tape is excellent.
