FWIW, Consumer Reports did an oil filter report back in the late
'80s sometime. They may have done one since, but I wasn't able to
find one on their web site.

The oil filters were all for the same (automotive) application.
Some kind of GM family barge, IIRC. CR sent them
to a testing lab, and several parameters were measured, including
filtration ability for different size particles, pressure drop at
a given flow rate, overpressure capacity, etc. My memory of the
details is pretty fuzzy now, BUT (drum roll):

The Fram filter did, by far, the best job at removing the
smallest (some number of microns, I disremember) particles and
was the best overall of the filters tested.

Obvious disclaimers would be that the results were only directly
applicable to the specific filter models tested, all sorts of
things have probably changed since then, yada, yada.
