There was no rust on my cylinders after 4 yrs static, in the garage. What do
you mean by "protect"?

If you only drive occasionally, perhaps an oil additive (STP or better)
would in order: it stays on the cyl walls for ages. (Apparently, you can run
a motor for an hour after dumping the oil, with STP.)
