Matt,
I think you may want to perform a compression test before you pull the head.
That would at least help rule out other likely problems. Sounds like you
could have an oil ring out on one of your pistons or valve trouble. Pull
the plugs and see if any are gas or oil soaked. See if someone else in the
area can test for hydrocarbons in the radiator. That is an important test.
My personal experience is that it's not worth pulling the head until you
have some idea what you are trying to fix.

Hi everyone,
Thank you for your responses. I leaned out the carbs and that helped the
start up problem and lessened the darkness of the exhaust somewhat but the
exhaust still is whitish. I put my finger in the tailpipe for a few seconds
and pulled it out wet and sooty. It seems to be running the same as when I
bought it a year and a half ago only the exhaust seems to have a little more
color to it. And it seems to be getting worse slowly.
I had it checked for a head gasket leak about a month ago and the guy said
that he couldn't find anything wrong with it. However, he couldn't do a
"sniffer" test because his setup wouldn't fit the car.
I think I'm going to pull the head soon just to see what is going on.
