That's the exact situation I have.  As Randall suggests, it is likely a 
broken taper pin and should be fixed soon.  OTOH, it has taken me more 
than 20 years to figure out I have this problem.

If you find some other cause for this (works only w/o return spring in 
place) I would appreciate knowing what it is.
