In a message dated 96-10-08 02:04:44 EDT, you write:

the friction, which feels like its comming from the base of the
shift lever, takes away any feel of what's going on in the transmission.
Is this common? Is there a rebuild kit that I should get?

Steve-

Many TR's, especially if they sit for a while, have a great propensity for
turning that nice lightweight grease that was put on the shifter, into
something resembling a cross between oatmeal and concrete. To rectify this,
just pull the shifter boot, remove the two nuts and studs on either side of
the steel cage and the set screw at the back, which hold in shifter ball. Now
you can "wiggle" off the cage and reveal the ugliness below. Clean the ball
socket and ball thouroughly (don't loose the little spring in the very bottom
of the shift lever), then apply a thin coat of light grease, reassemble, and
appreciate the effortless shifting.
