Alternator Installation

I'm planning to install an alternator in my Alfa which runs off the battery at
the present time (what a pain)

I did this once before in a Triumph using a Chevy Sprint unit, but it's been a
while
What single wire unit with an internal regulator should I use? I'm looking at
aftermarket units for over $300 and rebuilts for $150 with no core. Is there a
better approach?
