This is where a little intimate knowledge comes in handy.  On an inline
four cylinder engine the first and fourth piston move up and doen together.
 Ditto for the second and third.  So when one of these pairs is at the top
of its exhaust/intake stroke the other is at the top of the compression
stroke and the valves can be set.

Another way to think about it is the front half of the engine is mirrored
in the back half.  The same is true for the inline six.
