Well, as long as we're playing Hollywood Squares ... I'll go the other way
and say the "12" means the coil has an internal ballast (meaning it works on
12 volts).  "6" would indicate a coil without an internal ballast, meaning
it needs the "6 volts" supplied by an external ballast resistor.
