Scott,
I had the same problem here in California with my '58 TR3A. I bought the
car from a guy in Alabama and had it shipped here. What made it worse was
that the previous owner put a new Chassis number plate with the wrong
number on it since he had bought it without a chassis plate. TS34885L
became TS3488"S"L. UUUGGGHHH!

My story has a happy ending for two lucky reasons. The 4th previous owner
of this vehicle did the restoration work 10 years and I had a copy of the
Tenessee title with his name on it and the correct chassis number.
(important evidence!) He had a unique name and an internet search turned
him up. What's even more unbelievable is that he had the original chassis
plate in a box in his garage! I slapped that baby on and filled out my CA
paperwork with the correct number and the dmv clerk went with it!

Good Luck!
