Thanks to you all for responding to my question.
I'll probably give brazing a try to see what it's like but since the heat is
still an issue then I'll look at acquiring some lead solder and attempt this.
I've heard that it can be tricky to master this technique, a bit expensive
because of the lead and the possibility of health risks with the lead solder
fumes and dust when it's filed.
Perhaps there is a modern alternative (apart from the usual filler which
absorbs moisture) - anyone heard of one?
