Give the "bad guy" the benefit of the doubt and make ABSOLUTELY SURE it
is his intention to cheat you, BEFORE a public flogging.

We all know how the "media" can destroy a person's reputation with just
one bad reporting... and a subsequent "disclaimer" rarely heals the
wounds. And this would apply to our little newsgroup as well.

I, for example, mailed a couple gaskets out to customers in December...
and I assumed they were received. One person wrote to say he had not
yet recieved them... and I suggested he give them a couple more days
because of the holidays... (as maybe the post office was slow) I did
not hear back, so I assumed they were received. Almost a month later,
he wrote again to tell me they had not been received. I had not known
there had been a problem. The other customer had not even written me to
complain! But now, knowing an order must have been lost, I researched
the order and discovered that the Post Office had made a mistake,
diverted two packages wrongly, and now they were sitting on a shelf at
my maildrop.

If these customers had become outraged, and reported that I had failed
them in some way, the whole list would think poorly of me. Where, in
fact, it was really just one big postal foul up, that could happen to
anyone. Fortunately, for me, the customers in question were extremely
patient and understanding. Most gaskets are sent within days of
receieving their checks... and more often than not, before I have even
deposited their checks. (Unfortunately, I had a few Holiday blunders!)

I think you all get the moral of the story.
