Hi,

I won't reiterate some of the other replies that you got to your query
except to say that a parts washer and detergent solvent is a really good
way to go in terms of effectiveness and safety.

I too have used the Simple Green and the Casrtol Purple stuff. Good
products. I use them for various jobs all the time.

That having been said, I have also used good ol' oven cleaner. For folks
that don't do lots of engine jobs, this is pretty cost effective. I used
about 1/2 a can of the stuff to clean off a TR6 engine with all kinds of
crud on it. I merely placed some old newspaper under the engine, applied
the cleaner and let it set for an hour or two. I then used an old
tossable sponge and some warmish water to rinse. The only problem that I
had was that the grease on the sponge gets into the water bucket and it
forms little grease balls that stick to the bucket. This was really not a
problem, as I merely wiped the bucket clean upon completion of the task.

Get the kind of cleaner that is okay to breathe. Some oven cleaner is
really nasty in terms of toxicity. The fumes on some cleaners are not
good to breathe. Oh, and wear rubber gloves when you do this job.

bye,
rml
