When I pulled the engine out of my spit, I took as many of the anclenarys off
as possible and took the head of too.
I then used the head studs and bolted an old fence post across the head. This
provided me with a large handle at each side of the engine. Removal was then
simply a case of two people humping it out.
If you are putting it back in without an engine crane, I would advise
connecting the gear box back to the engine before putting it back in.
Getting the clutch engaged was an absolute swine, even with a crane!
I have knowledge of a bloke who claimed to be able to pull a spit engine
without a crane on his own!!!! He used a piece of rope attached to the front
and back of the engine, put it over his shoulder and lifted.
Have faith with the rebuild, it really is quite simple. You need little more
than a set of ring spanners and a few sockets. A torque wrench and a big
spanner for the crank nut.
