Sorry, I thought Rainbow Products used to have a web site. Try 704 278 0054,
ask for Mike Brown. I have bought several fans from them over the past 10
years & have always been well satisfied.

Thanks everyone for the help. I'll pull the plugs tonight and post some
macro pictures up on the web for review. Reading plugs accurately will be a
new skillset for me.

I'm currently running the stock 3.9 made even worse by using a V6 Camaro
T5 transmission. I'll probably pull the engine / transmission over the
winter to do a couple of minor things. I'm planning on putting a V8 T5 in
it when I do. I'll likely do the gear reduction starter at the same time as
well. A custom narrowed rear isn't in the cards right now.

Timing is a another issue all together. I swapped out my front cover
during the engine rebuild for the aftermarket 215 cover with the neoprene
seal. Unfortunately the aftermarket cover doesn't have timing marks like
the original. I've been meaning to fab up a small bracket with the
appropriate timing marks based on the original cover I still have. Maybe my
timing is more advanced than I think it is.

I'll measure clearance for the 16" puller fan. It's going to be tight.
My engine isn't back as far as I'd like it to be. Another lessons learned
mistake. I'd certianly build the car differently a second time around.

Jim, after a quick search of the net, I couldn't find any references to
fans made by Rainbow Products.

It's good to see many of the same people on the list from back when the
list was young, and V8 conversions were still uncommon to see.

You have enough radiator, but not enough fan. I suggest a 16" puller of
around 3000 cfm. Try Rainbow Products. If you space the radiator
forward,
    you should have enough room.

The heat shield is a good idea. Cut one from a cookie sheet or buy one
from
    Glenn Towery.

Heat soak of the starter has always been a problem. Get a gear reduction
starter from D & D Fabrications. It is smaller, so has more clearance
from
the headers, & is much more powerful than the Buick or Vega starters. D
& D
can also send you the correct needles for your carb. That may or may not
help the surging. I have never had this problem, but I know the stock
needles/jets are not correct for your 3.9.

You didn't say what rear end you are using. If it is the stock MGB, you
are
turning a lot more revs than necessary, which makes the engine run hot.
Also
read your spark plugs after a run. You may need a cooler plug and also
check
your timing. Too much advance will make for a hot engine.
