Charles:

Besides Dave's information on using a light belt tension there's more.
The workshop manual on lubrication of the rear bush bearing is in
error. You should use oil and not grease as the owner's and workshop
shop manual recommend. A new rear bush bearing is soaked in oil before
installation. Why use grease which has a very high temperature flow
point? The same bush is used in the MGA and early MGB generators, and
their manuals say to use oil! The findings of the NEMGTR were that
those who were using oil (some inadvertently) didn't have near the bush
bearing problems as those following the workshop manual.

So,
1) Use a light belt tension. Just enough to make sure the belt doesn't
slip. It it does, the tach might jump around and quite often there is
belt squeak. Use a belt dressing instead of tightening the belt
tension.
2) Switch to oil in the rear bush bearing. Add a few drops every 500
miles. Just keep the wick damp with oil.

Gene:

The specifications I have for the TC generator says it's only a 13 amp
unit at 13 volts. The early TDs have a 17 amp unit and the later TDs
and TFs have 19 amps.
