Hi All!
With my new '77 TR7 running like a charm, I'd like to be able to fill
the tank with petrol. The problem is that the PO hadn't driven the car
in 7 years - plenty of time for water to accumulate in the gas tank (via
the nifty filler on the rear deck with the broken rubber ring). I first
noticed the problem when I observed that the car was out of gas - then
proceeding to try to put some in the tank. "Hey, whats that puddle under
the car??" a quick wiff revealed it to be all the petrol I had put in
the tank. Upon inspection, I found a pin hole (from rust) at the very
lowest point in the tank.
Has anybody had success in welding up gas tanks?
ie. What should I do/not do?
I was thinking of flushing the tank with water, and then leaving some
water in the bottom of it while I weld the tank (to help keep the heat
down and to add water vapour to the petrol vapour - thereby reducing its
flammability).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
(I would buy a used one from the wrecker, but I'm affraid that theirs
may almost as bad- I doubt they take them out of the cars to hang them
in a dry place...)
