I've been a AAA member for several years. I'll admit that I never asked those
questions before I joined. However, anytime I have ever used it I have always
been asked if I preferred a rollback/flatbed. I have used the service several
times (mostly on non-British cars), they allow four uses per year without
question. Not once have they dictated where the car would be towed to. They
have always asked where the car was and where I wanted it taken. I have the
"Plus" membership which allows up to 100 miles towing for free. Since towing a
car across town can cost more than the yearly membership, I feel its a
bargain.
Coverage may differ in other areas as well. Most of the tow trucks I see in my
area are flatbeds anymore. Very few of the hook trucks. Too many AWD vehicles
in my area may be one reason. ;)
The other part that I like is the membership is tied to you, not a specific
car. So it covers multiple cars if need be without additional cost.
