I have a hot tub that recently developed a slow leak. Thankfully, the leak is very accessible. At the bottom of the filter housing a pipe goes in one side and out the other. Each pipe is light-colour

Is this similar to JB-Weld? I just have JB Weld around so if it was I'd consider using it... Thanks. -- Trevor Boicey, P. Eng. Ottawa, Canada, tboicey@brit.ca ICQ #17432933 http://www.brit.ca/~tboice

If I didn't want to do it right, I'd give it a good cleaning, scuffing, by a fillet of an epoxy paste. This should work well, expecially with less than 1 psi. Dave Would be nice to just paint on some

...well, I guess part of my question is "how to fix it right". If I could open the pipe and reseal the joint that would be my first choice, but I'm not sure if that's possible. There isn't really any

There is no way to "unglue" it. The "glue" is actually a solvent which melts the PVC and welds the pieces together. Get a can of PVC cleaner and a can of PVC cement. Clean the seam and flood it with

Be sure what material you are working with. Are you sure it is PVC? Since a hot tub will deal with hot water, CPVC may be what is installed. See if you can find any markings on the pipe or fittings t

Last time I was at the hardware store I noticed they have a PVC glue that is designed for wet applications. As in specifically you don't have to drain the water. That might be an ideal product for yo

If you have straight-in access to the fitting, you can cut off the pipe and bore out the inside of the hub. Plumbing supply shops sell a tool to do this - IIRC it's about $25 but looks like it should

I looked at Plumber's Goop at the local store but it seemed to say that it wasn't recommended for "warm water" or "chlorinated water". Is this the same stuff? I'm thinking of just trying some epoxy (

Strange, I haven't tried it yet, but the JB Weld web site lists PVC in the "What does it bond to" section... Have you had experiences with it falling off? I will check again but I think it's PVC and

Trying to open the joint and resealing it is really a poor choice. The right way is to replace the entire section that is leaking. And since this sounds like a very difficult procedure, I honestly w

JB Weld and other products like it dry to an inflexible brittle state. That's fine on the side of an iron engine block, but doesn't work well on plastics that inherently flex. It's not so much that t

JB Weld sticks to PVC just fine, if you prep the surface as recommended. First roughen with coarse sandpaper, then wipe down with acetone. I repaired a PVC chlorinator on my pool pump several years
