My old Honda Civic is making popping or cracking sounds when I give it gas when the steering wheel is turned. I suspect this is the CV joints starting to go bad. I'm wondering if anyone can tell me w

the classic symptom of a bad cv joint is a steady clicking when turning sharply. popping and cracking could be other things too, such as loose strut tower bolts, bad strut, loose or missing sway bar

Ya, that sounds like the correct Diagnosis. Specials tools needed, very long breaker bar to pop loose the crown nut on the wheel end of the halfshaft, ball-joint seperator, and snap-ring plyers. Are

Thanks guys for the advice. "really messy and uncomfortable and hard work" doesn't sound like the kind of thing that I want to do myself. This would be the first time I've ever sent this car to a mec

Yeah, you can buy refurbished halfshafts w/ both joints and new boots for about $150? (as I recall) and it's an easier job. I'd go that way, as the other joint could go next month... Jerry Mouton mai

That could change my approach. If the job is easier when replacing the entire halfshafts, and I can buy them for around $150, then I would be inclined to do the job myself. I'll have to call a servic

I suspect that if you take it to a mechanic, they will pretty much insist on replacing the entire halfshaft with a rebuilt unit, rather than rebuilding a specific CV joint. Less labor. You will still

I beg to differ. One axle on my del Sol takes about 30 minutes to remove, and that includes jacking up the car. You can get a full axle from www.raxles.com for pretty cheap. And it will have brand ne

Sorry, bad memory! I checked, and the axles were $237.42 each on 6/9/2000 from Foreign Affair, and they were new Honda units. Maybe they told me refurbished ones were $150, but I decided to go with r

I called them today and they said it would cost around $600 total to do both axles. If the parts alone are $500, then the $100 or so for the labor seems like a good deal. Thanks for all the info, and

Well here are the details I've learned today in case any of you guys with Civics are interested. Each halfshaft has two CV joints, one inner, one outer. Basically, they last effectively forever until

I'm not sure who "they" are, but my experience (as a Honda/Acura service advisor for 4 years) with the reman axles is that they tend to be good for about 2 years. Then, when the noise comes back, and

In this case, "they" are the folks at Foreign Affair. Not knowing much about this myself, I asked and they said they have an aftermarket source of reman axles that they say last as long as the Honda
