Well here are the details I've learned today in case any of you guys with
Civics are interested.

Each halfshaft has two CV joints, one inner, one outer. Basically, they last
effectively forever until & unless one of the rubber boots is damaged -- at
which point the grease drains out & the CV joint dies a noisy death. When
damage occurs, it is usually one of the outer CV joints.

You can replace any of the 4 joints, they run about $200 each if you get OEM
Honda parts. Or, you can get a remanufactured halfshaft with both CV joints on
it for about $170 (less than half the total price). They say the
remanufactured ones last just as long as the new ones.

So if you DIY, total cost can be as cheap as $170 per side for the whole
thing, and simpler labor because that's the entire halfshaft with both joints
on it.

Or you can go to Foreign Affair and they'll charge about $80 per side for
labor.

Thanks for the help, you guys gave me an education and saved me a bunch of
money.

I called them today and they said it would cost around $600 total to do both
axles. If the parts alone are $500, then the $100 or so for the labor seems
like a good deal.

Thanks for all the info, and I'm looking forward to another ten years with
this car.

Sorry, bad memory!

I checked, and the axles were $237.42 each on 6/9/2000 from
Foreign Affair, and they were new Honda units. Maybe they
told me refurbished ones were $150, but I decided to go with
real Honda parts, as I understand that's a real good idea with
these cars.

They chaged $126.00 on a separate date to install both
axles.
