That could change my approach. If the job is easier when replacing the entire
halfshafts, and I can buy them for around $150, then I would be inclined to do
the job myself. I'll have to call a service shop and find out how much they
would charge to see if it's worth doing myself.

Yeah, you can buy refurbished halfshafts w/ both
joints and new boots for about $150? (as I recall)
and it's an easier job. I'd go that way, as the other
joint could go next month...
