Just got my new motor running and what the manual is telling me is a bit conflicting. I have a slightly modified 74 motor with all emission gear removed. The manual is showing 4 degrees A.T.D.C., whi

Gary's question poses an interesting "contest type question". Since contests are not allowed: let's all join in and try to discover the answer to his A.T.D.C., B.T.D.C. ignition timing question. Ther

If you have the vacuum retard connected, you time the engine at 4 ATDC. If you have the vacuum retard disconnected, you can time the engine @ 8-10 BTDC. I have the vacuum retard disconnected on my c

Regarding the thermal control switch, vacuum retard and overheating at idle... I have a '70 which does not have the thermal control switch, but does have the dual vacuum (advance/retard) distributor.

Thanks for starting the thread! The thermal vacuum switch that you refer to actually shuts-off the vacuum retard for the benefit of emissions, (when the engine is at operating temperature). The engi

I think you just solved an issue I was having. The thermal switch deal is new to me! My car would start to overheat at idle on hot days, and adding a pusher on the front did no good even will all of

Your '70 did not use the thermal control switch (looked it up using the TRF big catalogue, volume 1). I'm not familiar with how the system on the year of your car works so I don't want to steer you

According to the TRF book, your '76 does not have that particular thermal switch (located in the upper radiator hose). According to TRF, cars CC75000 (1972) thru CF35000 (1974) would have the therma

Gary--My reply here as to the issue of ignition timing at idle falls close to Terry's corner. This is my understanding: Triumph, in their effort to comply with our Feds knew that certain emissions, n

If I remember my IC Engines theory, (that was longer ago than I care to admit) retarded timing will cause a hotter engine. I believe it is because ignition is occurring at lower pressures and burning
