I finally got around to trying some heavier oil in the tranny, Red Line 75W140NS. No problem shifting into first on a six hour drive in mid 80s temperature. I don't know why, but this heavier oil rea

I have never used 75W140 in a TD trans. I usually use MT 90, which is equivalent to a 75W 90 or 10-40 oil. I use MTL in my MGB W/OD. I also have a Volvo 122 w/OD, and it also uses MT 90. All shift v

To clarify (in my mind anyway), the 75W140NS was for your TD - right? I wonder about going to a higher viscosity, just to quieten a noisy first gear. I do use, and recommend, Redline MT-90 in my TD

DO NOT use MT-90 in dif. It is made only for use in manual transmissions. There is NO hypoid additive in this oil.. Skip....................................................... /// unsubscribe/change

Wow! My TD has the exact same symptom, right down to the 30 minutes! I wonder if we have the same problem? I figure the time factor must be related to something heating up. Now the TD doesn't have sy

In my experience that's a pretty common situation with many BritCars. I find that it goes into 1st gear smoothly if you press in the clutch all the way, then shift into second gear then immediately i

Maybe a thought to consider: might this be a clutch problem, rather than a gearbox problem? I wonder if your clutch is disengaging right near the bottom of its travel. If so, it might be worthwhile t

I think you will be better off using Redline MT-90 in your trans. This is what Redline recommended, and what I use in theTD and Y type. I am using MTL in the MGB w. OD. Although MT- 90 is recommende

Bob D., My TD has the same habit. Until two years ago, it had the usual 90w oil in its gearbox, and it would be difficult to engage first, sometimes, from stop without pulling toward second and then

Hi Bob and Lists, I drove four different Austin Healey Sprites for 15 years and they always did that. I just took it to be normal. Like you said, just pulling the shifter towards second, not actually

Hi All: I have had the same situation with at least one Alfa as well as a Fiat and my MG TF1500. I rather thought it was pretty normal, particulary with no synchro first gears. In fact I was informed

Dave gave some good reasons for the problem now to add my 2 cents. Not only are the TC through early MGB transmissions not synchromesh on first gear they aren't constant mesh. 4th gear isn't really
