Bob D.,
My TD has the same habit. Until two years ago, it had the usual 90w
oil in its gearbox, and it would be difficult to engage first, sometimes,
from stop without pulling toward second and then pushing toward first.
Then I switched to Redline MT-90. In my opinion, the first gear hang-up
got better. It's still present, however.
So my guess is that the oil is not the issue and that there is some
internal, mechanical reason.
