Yes, coil do sometimes get weaker with age. I assume it's because the
windings inside short to each other, effectively reducing the number of
windings. This is just an assumption on my part, but I do know the coils can
slowly deteriate.
A friend called not too long ago because his car was missing at high speeds,
but ran fine at low speed. After hearing the symptoms, and the tests he had
made, I suggested that he replace his coil. He didn't do it at first, because
he also was of the opinion that they either worked or not. After a week or
so, and out of frustration, he finally replaced the coil because he ran out
of other options. Problem solved.
