Keep an eye on the oil and coolant levels. Are you losing either at an
alarming rate ( I know, how can you tell when the oil leaks out of every
where). Might give you a clue as to which one is passing through the
tailpipe. How's your compression? It might pay to check it and keep a
record over time to establish if it is excessive wear.
BTW, I read last night in my original Mk III manual that I'm supposed to
check the oil level DAILY. That's every day! And yet, change my oil filter
every 12,000 miles. Very different by today's standards.
