Well I looked at the Buckeye Triumphs site again and by golly you're right, 
that's what he says. I've never done it that way and I think I'll continue 
to remove the whole OD before I disassemble it. The shop manual does not 
agree with Buckeye Triumph's procedure. I did my first OD long before the 
Buckeye Triumphs articles were published. Having said that I think his 
articles are very well written and helpful.

I need to look at those instructions again as I've never done it that way,
always the entire unit and then disassemble the OD. I'd just go ahead and
remove the OD from the transmission and proceed.

Nope. Trying to follow along per the buckeye article. He recommended
removing the rear housing while the OD is still attached. My next try will
be to remove the whole unit unless I have an aha moment and figure out
what's going on.
