Shouldn't be a problem to by pass it but better to fix it.  It's just a
rheostat - they don't break very often.  Usually they just get dirty and
corroded.  Spray some electrical cleaner like Cremalin or De-Ox-It in to the
rheostat and then move the knob back and forth a couple dozen times.  Spray
a little more cleaner in to it to wash away the crud you just loosened and
it should work good as new.  If you can't fine electrical cleaner, you can
use WD40 but Deoxit is better.
