One of the tricks is to apply steady pressure to the filter.  This allows the 
rubber seal to slide across the filter base.  Steady pressure works much 
better than a quick hard pull.  Try not to crush or puncture the filter as 
this will reduce leverage.  Crushing and screwdriver through the can are a 
last resort.

When gripping the can with a strap wrench, keep the strap near either end, 
the filter is the strongest at this point.

When reinstalling the filter, hand tighten only.  3/4 turn from initial 
gasket contact is plenty.  Over tightening can lead to the gasket pushing out 
and causing a leak.
