Folks, 
Sorry to be pedantic here but in the interest of safety, I feel I must
comment.  The use of fuels and kerosenes to dissolve undercoating is
rather dangerous, especially if used in combination with another method
mentioned in this discussion (torching).  In fact with years of
accumulated grease and tar the use of a welding torch seems to be
inadviseable for this purpose.  Likewise smoking while stripping off the
cars underside with all the newspapers and solvent around has to rank as
rather foolish.  As a safe solution (while slightly more costly) I would
recommend using a high quality, chemical gel paint remover and alot of
time.
