The difference is in the direction the low beams point.  When you dim
("dip", in UK) your headlamps, the beams not only point downwards, they
also point to the side.  For LHD cars, they point to the right (looking
forward) and for RHD cars they point to the left.  Thus, if you used RHD
headlights in USA, they would point into oncoming traffic (albeit lower)
when dimmed.
