[Shop-talk] Can steel cable be welded?

I'd like to hear plan B first. I'd wonder if welding the cable would weaken 
it or cause hard/inflexible areas.

Can you add a spacer at the other end? Remove the cable and take it to 
someone who can put on a new end fitting?
