I have a copy of Tom Brownell's "How to Restore Your Collector Car" in
which he discusses such recipes. For paint and grease removal he first
uses a lye solution. For rust removal he uses Phosphoric Acid. He used
American Parts brand "Rust Remover" which is phosphoric acid, diluted 2:1
with water. He also discusses hydrogen embrittlement, and how it can
weaken springs, spindles, etc. And, of course, if you put in any aluminum,
brass, pot metal, etc the acid will attack it. BTW, he says the acid
solution has a distinct "garlic and onions" odor. For disposal, they talk
about taking the solution to a sanitary landfill facility where it goes
into a deep trench "far from anyone's water supply". Yeah, right. It was
a different world in 1984, the copyright date of this book.
