When we were kids we did not have the luxury of a bearing press readily
available. So after heating the old bearing so it fell off, we would
install the new bearing with a steel pipe that slipped over the axle, and
that was a bit longer than the axle, and that was the same diameter as the
bearing at the inside diameter. Fitting it all together was accomplished
with a sledgehammer, and the axle and pipe in an upright position. The only
thing to be aware of is where the old bearing was set on the axle, and to be
as close as possible to the old setting. Pat
