It doesn't sound like your mechanic is correct.  YOU MUST ALSO SWITCH
THE LOW TENSION LEADS AT THE COIL.

I'd be very careful about what this mechanic says or does as he should
know the leads at the coil need swapping.  MGs, especially the T and
earlier series have many idiosyncrasies which need a through knowledge
of.
