That's a soundproofing material. Its density cuts down direct sound, and
also dampens vibrations in the sheet metal. You can save a few pounds
by ripping it out, but it'll add to the 'buzziness' of the car (which you
may or may not notice :-) )

If it didn't serve a purpose, Nissan would have saved a buck and left
it out...
