 use it on aluminum.  The lye in oven cleaner will etch the
 aluminum.  If you leave it on too long, you can pit it badly,
 beyond repair.  (You'd have to leave it soaking for days to wreck
 it mechanically - I'm talking cosmetic damage here.) >>

More than skin deep!
That's how I decided to bore the 283 in my old '57 Chevy to a 301. While
rebuilding the 283, I accidentally put the pistons in the lye tank with the
engine block and other stuff...bye-bye pistons!!!
