I'm finding perception is a big part of it.  Show up in
your street car and find you're running against a
tube-framed, gutted, slick-shod race car and that'll
take the wind out of your sails quickly.  There are
enough EM cars out there that you'll probably run into
one regionally and all it takes is one.
