I don't think Stirling has anything to lose by having his doors blown off.
His place in history is secure. He does have something to lose by trying to
mix it up at his age and making foolish moves. Do legendary drivers really
risk reputation tarnishment by getting passed? I think not. I don't care if
Brian Redmond runs at the back, the pleasure comes from seeing him in a car
that he perhaps once drove seriously. Legendary drivers are out there to
give us a sense of history and their place in it. It doesn't bother me that
Chuck Yeager can't pull g's in a P-51 like he once could; I take pleasure
from just seeing him get it off the ground and take a full-power flyover. It
seems to me the notion that old timers like Moss are out there to run at the
front misses their value to the event.
