Couple of comments.......first, its not too likely you'll be able to have yo=
ur
cake and eat it too relative to having a race car that you can drive on the
street with SCCA. The mods necessary to be competive, even moderately, make=
most cars untenable for street use. The same is probably true for vintage b=
ut
it's possible to have a relatively inexpensive vintage car that would be
streetable, though not so easy as you might think.
A better option is to get an inexpensive Porsche or BMW. The 944 comes to
mind as well as the 2002. Porsche and BMW clubs have good driver training
programs as well as autocross and time trial programs and nationally sponsor=
ed
race programs that have stock classes. The classes are both competitive and=
the mods allowed are somewhat limited so the car remains street drivable.
Racing has two distinct components. One is knowing how to drive the car, th=
e
other is driving in competition including safety, strategy, rules of the roa=
d,
etc. My personal opinion is that if you come into vintage racing and have t=
o
learn both at once, you've got a big hill to climb. If you find yourself in=
race group and you don't know how to drive to at least 80% of your cars
potential, you'll have a tough time learning how to drive the car fast as
you'll be spending much of your track time off the racing line to stay out o=
f
peoples way.
Drivers ed, time trials and open track events are a better venue to learn to=
drive. Once you've gotten a good handle on getting your car around a track
quickly, start racing and learn the rest as you go.

I have been a race fan for years, and have finally decided to become a racer
as well as a fan. I have a question, for a first timer, should I look at SCC=
A
racing or would vintage racing be better? I am on a limited budget, and have
more time than money. Maybe an SCCA class with a street drivable car?
