I recently had mine apart and the pot metal had deformed from my 
over-enthusiastic tightening of the glass bowl.  In the end I used a 
triple layer of 1/16" cork to get a gasket that would conform to the new 
shape.

I think some use substitutes for that missing seal (from a brake rebuild 
kit?) and others (me anyway) find that the pump seems to work fine 
without it.
