Jay,

Adrian is right, the cutoff won't remove electrical power if the engine is
running with alternator still working.  I think this is true no matter which
side you isolate, if you're isolating the battery at the battery terminal.

The reason the books tell you to remove the negative lead from the battery
first is because you might ground the wrench while on the battery terminal.
If the wrench is on the negative terminal no problem --- if on the positive
terminal when grounded, many sparks and much heat.   Once the negative
terminal is disconnected, then grounding the positive terminal will cause no
problem.

I can think of no technical reason why it is better to isolate plus or
minus.   However,  I guess from an emotional view, I'd prefer to isolate the
positive side to get all the wires off the battery.  I can think of no
technical reason to support this.
