I managed to remove the nut with the engine still in the frame by pulling
the head and dropping an appropriately-sized block of soft wood, like pine
or fir, in to a couple of cylinders and replacing the head (without the
rocker shaft installed).  Then with a socket and breaker bar and a long
piece of pipe for extra leverage, I was able to loosen the nut.  Good luck!
