Because synthetic is actually *to* slippery for the metal to metal
contacting parts to properly mate to each other (rings, bearings, rockers,
tappets etc). This process is required for long engine life and to operate
at optimum efficiency. Using regular oil for the first 1000 or so miles
allows these parts to properly bed, and then switching to synthetic gives
you the other benefits of that oil on a properly broken in engine-
