Surely, Greg, you don't mean to imply that higher octane somehow creates
more HP without engine mods (higher compression, different cam,
supercharger) to take advantage of it. The correct octane rating for your
car/climate/driving-style is the one that doesn't allow pre-ignition. Once
octane has been raised to the point where the "knocking and pinging" is
gone, higher octane won't create more power, so you're just throwing money
away. Contrary to popular belief, higher octane fuel does not contain more
energy, it just ignites more slowly.
BTW, I don't use lead additives and my valves seem to do just fine.
