That's the way they are supposed to be installed. I can't explain why, but
every one I've looked at said to do it that way.
My impression is that the tub is designed to deform under the stress of the
water plus occupant; and the bottom can't handle the total stress. It has
to be hung or risk breaking at the bottom. But that's just a WAG.
