Vinegar'll eat the rust out of a heavily rusted tank in 2-4 days.  I 
wouldn't call that very slow.

Phosphoric acid is a cola ingredient.  That's why this works on rust also. 
But the concentration is a bit low, so it is slower than vinegar.
